Oh–I Sea You!

Some of us were up early for the sunrise.
It came over the horizon at 7:17AM as promised.

IMG_8243IMG_8244IMG_8247IMG_8250IMG_8251

Some watched from the deck, while I sat in my chair and kept warm.  It was maybe 21F out.  Historic temps and all.

IMG_8254

Johanna and Katriel played a long time with the new Madrigal house:

IMG_8256IMG_8257

We ate Christmas Day leftovers for breakfast with this view:

IMG_8258IMG_8259

After breakfast, most of us decided to take a walk out to the beach.
Some of us couldn’t resist a little salt water.

IMG_8267IMG_8271IMG_8273IMG_8282

This little sandpiper brought me a lot of joy.

IMG_8285

After a bit of shell hunting, John, the girls and I went over to Barefoot Landing to do some shopping and touring.

I was very much dressed for this shop.

IMG_8296IMG_8295

We found a sweets shoppe and left quite a bit of money there.

IMG_8298IMG_8300IMG_8301IMG_8302

But we didn’t leave empty handed.

IMG_8304

IMG_E8307

Back at the condo, I worked on prepping our dinner (the beef went in the crockpot early this morning) and we joined the boys making the most of their work environment.

IMG_8308IMG_8310

I could cook with this view every day.

IMG_8313IMG_8315

Our Christmas feast was just as awesome on 12/26 as it would have been 12/25.

IMG_8317

We all did our own thing for a few hours.

IMG_8319

And in lieu of a proper dinner most of us headed over to The Crazy Mason to meet some of our friends who were also traveling to North Myrtle Beach this week.

IMG_8320IMG_8322IMG_8323IMG_8324IMG_8325IMG_8326IMG_8327IMG_8501

Tabitha, Marie, and Nigel ate 100% of their treats.  I believe Katriel had 15%…
John, Johanna, and I managed about 75%.

It was delicious.

Merry Christmas – 2022

It was our second Christmas in the new house, and it felt a lot less awkward.

With that said, it was somewhat unusual.  For the first time that I can remember, Nan and Nene were not with us.  And late last evening it was confirmed that Noelle would NOT have a late day flight today.

The kids were up by 7AM and we started opening gifts around 7:30AM.  While gifts in and of themselves are not my focus of Christmas, I do love to see how the kids gift one another.  I simply can’t take photos of every exchange, but they are all very special.

Nigel bought Tab some ramen noodles.

IMG_8176

And gave the girls two movies to share; they each got to open one of them.

IMG_8177IMG_8178

Marie also got movies, and I have no idea what is on the in the background… some kind of Christmas music channel.

IMG_8180

There were presents from Nan, Nene, Barb, Ba, Poppy and Noelle that we opened and tried to share with them back home in a variety of ways.

IMG_8182IMG_8184IMG_8185IMG_8187IMG_8188

IMG_8190IMG_8192IMG_8193IMG_8196

Our feast was a little less intense than other years, but just as filling.
Johanna’s casserole was delicious, and it really is all about the cinnamon rolls.

IMG_8189

The kids opened some gifts from us, and I think Daddy’s selection of the Madrigal house, Casita, from Encanto was a good choice, judging from Katriel’s reaction.  Thank you Black Friday sales!

IMG_E8205IMG_8207

I daresay the most memorable gifts were the ones I could not take photos of because I was holding Stewart’s phone up in a FaceTime with Noelle.  She had planned to be here when the girls opened their gifts, but wisely had sent them back in the car with Stewart on his November trip to NY.  The gifts included letters asking them to be in her wedding a bridesmaids and junior bridesmaids.  They were all elated and touched.

We worked at getting the mess a little under control before we headed out to church.

QGTS3828IMG_8212

The service was lovely, and there were a lot of new faces.  I hope the visitors were blessed to hear about Emmanuel.

Once we were home from church, we changed into travelling clothes, backed the coolers, and got our bags into the big van and Stewart’s car.  We caravaned pretty much due east as we headed to North Myrtle Beach for a three night stay in a condo.  That idea was born when I realized Nan and Nene wouldn’t be coming AND the Hoyts would be out of town.  With no one to celebrate with, it became a case of, “well – since it is going to be weird, let’s embrace weird and add on a little different.”  Since everything the kids would do during a break could be done at a rental, AND it would keep me from feeling like I had to use my free time to organize a chest of drawer or paint a closet or deep clean a bath in my free time.  We opted for a beach view vs a mountain view.

We did the requisite stop at Buc-ee’s in Florence.  Sadly, we didn’t stay long and browse.  It was not only mobbed (I’m okay with that), but also the bathrooms were closed because of a county-wide water issue.

IMG_8215

We made it to North Myrtle beach by 5PM, and retrieved our key from the rental company.  We found the condo complex, but then it took some time to find our particular unit (the signage was poor).  We quickly settled in and I started pulling out our dips and snacks.  Marie assisted me while Daddy helped Katriel set up her new toy house.

IMG_8224

We enjoyed snacks and games and fun drinks.

IMG_8226IMG_8228LRYY2779

Noelle gave us a new trivia game.

HFTR8255

Finally, we watched the girls’ new movie The Bad Guys. It was hysterical.
The rental was huge – four bedrooms, four bathrooms, massive living area and extremely well-appointed kitchen.

Thankfully, their off season pricing was acceptable and they allowed stays by the night and not the week.

Soft Serve Sunday

There a few things the Butlers don’t do much of.

1) Slow down
2) Go out for ice cream
3) Explore local digs

So today we did all three.

We visited another church this morning.  The sermon was really strong and the youth/family pastor was so helpful and warm, but the seats were super uncomfortable and the worship was a little different than we are used to.  But it seemed authentic, so we will be praying about it.

We decided to try a soft serve place up the street from us.  Every time we drove down Main Street from Simpsonville to Fountain Inn over the last month, we could see the long line of dedicated diners.  Essentially, it’s basic soft serve with any wonderful concoction you can think of.  It’s also safe for Stewart.

IMG_0635

I got a Tiramisu treat.

IMG_0639

Marie got some kind of Turtle style (butterfingers?).

IMG_0644

Katriel couldn’t finish her chocolate lovers sundae.  We teased maybe she is just a chocolate liker.

IMG_0650

We’ve been here a month now.  There are moments where it still feels like we are on some long, lame vacation.  Glad we are here together.

Fourth of July at Busch Gardens

We enjoyed an amazing breakfast (grits) before we headed to the park.

IMG_9759IMG_9767

we arrived as it was opening with no real touring plan

IMG_9771

Sometimes we were a large group, sometimes we were smaller groups.
I found coffee.  We bought all day dining (a real treat – every 90 minutes we could queue for an entree, drink and either a side or dessert).

IMG_9780IMG_9784IMG_9792IMG_9801IMG_9809IMG_9811IMG_9816IMG_9826IMG_9836

Trying lots of food was almost as much fun as trying lots of rides.

IMG_9838IMG_9845

It was very hot and a very good day.

IMG_9858IMG_9860IMG_9875IMG_9882IMG_9890IMG_9892IMG_9894

It almost felt like 2019 again.

IMG_9899IMG_9907IMG_9913IMG_9927

Photos are out of order as kids have shared some from their devices and I am going for speed here, not accuracy.

IMG_9935IMG_9938IMG_9945

It was a wonderful weekend, though the drive home on 7/5 was again miserable.

At least we had another massive breakfast at the same place.
If it ain’t broke…

Busch Gardens or Bust

John left for SC June 20 for his first day of work June 21.  The kids and I have been working towards the movers coming (soon?).

With the holiday weekend between John’s start date and the movers coming, we knew we’d need to be creative to make the holiday feel holiday-ish.  Our pool is closed bc there was no way I was going to deal with that in John’s absence.  It would be extremely hard on John to come all the way back to NY.

Our decision was to meet John in Williamsburg, VA for a very quick long weekend.  Once we found the location, we decided to do a day at Busch Gardens Williamsburg.  The kids have never been there and John and I were last there on our honeymoon in 1997.

The tickets were $79 per person for one day or $86 per person for two day.  It only took a minute to decide it was well worth the $7 per person to add the partial day we were going to be there.

The kids and I were up long before the sun and on the road before 6AM.  I’d like to say we made great time, but that would be a lie.  There were way too many bathroom stops, a turn around or two (looking for bathrooms) and the DC traffic.

But we did get to our (dumpy) hotel by 4PM and dropped off our stuff and hurried to the park.

We rode the tram in and it actually felt like VACATION.  A glorious feeling after being locked down so long.

IMG_9735IMG_9738IMG_9739

We rode what we could, and grabbed a great dinner.
Staffing was a major issue (like it is everywhere these days).
But everyone was friendly and there were no mask requirements.

IMG_9741IMG_9743IMG_9746

Stewart, Katriel and I skipped one of the roller coasters and found spots for fireworks, which while they weren’t Disney quality, sure were a lot of fun.

2020 Christmas… uncancelable

While our Christmas Eve service was cancelled, there was no stopping us for Christmas Day… and we determined to enjoy it.

The kids were up early and we waited for Stewart and Noelle to arrive (he had gone out to her town for Christmas Eve).

IMG_7600IMG_7620IMG_7623IMG_7628IMG_7632

Ba and Poppy weren’t feeling up to the AM outing this year and we missed them.

IMG_7633IMG_7637

Gifting was insane, as usual.

IMG_7639IMG_7640

Tab had beautiful homemade art work for each of us.

IMG_7642IMG_7643IMG_7644

this is mine, from our epic Disney Trip last year.

IMG_7645

Kelly wrapped Katriel’s gift in a chip box and we momentarily had Katriel convinced she had a giant box of chips.  Her acceptance level for that was beautiful.

IMG_7653

She really had a Jessie outfit.

IMG_7657

Daddy bought Marie, Tab and I all bags.

IMG_7659IMG_7660

Loungefly bags

IMG_7696IMG_7664

Daddy got the best gift of all – Costa Rican coffee.

IMG_7665

Nan got the largest gift of all…

IMG_7671IMG_7674

She had asked for it!!

Katriel made Johanna a shirt.

IMG_7691

Mom “made” the boys each new shirts.

IMG_7692IMG_7693

Tabby wanted girly combat boots.

IMG_7706

Nigel got a computer chair.

IMG_7707

Stewart got a desk extension.

IMG_7712

He later showed us how it worked – he can stand and edit now to change his body mechanics.

IMG_7743

there were games and cooking

IMG_7746

and at 4PM or so, Noelle’s parents and brother came up to share dinner with us.

IMG_7749IMG_7750

Noelle gave us two new games and we watched the instructions online.

IMG_7753

We laughed so hard as we pretended to be dinosaurs, etc.

IMG_7755

It was such a fabulous holiday!

Camping 2020! 8/25

Another early morning, but this time I had everyone up by 8AM.

Breakfast was amazing.

IMG_6061IMG_6063

We drove an hour north to Fort Ticonderoga.  This was a dream come true for me.

IMG_6067IMG_6068IMG_6071IMG_6073IMG_6076IMG_6079IMG_6090IMG_6097IMG_6100IMG_6113IMG_6114IMG_6115

We left for lunch and grabbed some pizza.  The pizza was amazing; the service and cost was repulsive.

John dropped me and five of the kids off back at the fort, while he and Stewart went to the Star Trek museum.

IMG_6183IMG_6184IMG_6185IMG_6186IMG_6189IMG_6191

IMG_6119

We checked out  a few more things (canon firing) and then looked around the gardens.

IMG_6123IMG_6124IMG_6126IMG_6132IMG_6133IMG_6136IMG_6138

We tried to do the corn maze, but it seemed to be closed.

We went back and joined a tour until John and Stewart met up with us again.

IMG_6142IMG_6144IMG_6146

Our admission to the Fort also allowed us access to Mt. Defiance.

IMG_6148

We went up the mountain as far as we could drive then hiked up the last little bit.  It was paved.  We then were able to look back down upon the Fort and see Lake Champlain for a good distance.

IMG_6149IMG_6151IMG_6155

We saw an extremely large cricket by the bathroom.  I’m glad it wasn’t in the middle of the night.

IMG_6201IMG_6202IMG_6204

Dinner and another nice campfire.

Camping! 2020 8/23 & 8/24

As soon as Stewart got home from work this morning, we headed out for camping near Lake George, NY.

We set up camp in the rain… and, as always, we realize that all campgrounds are not created equal.  But we figured it out and got on to eating.
I do love cooking over a campfire, and tonight’s dinner of hot roast beef sandwiches did not disappoint.  We made sugar cone “smores” and enjoyed the campfire.

IMG_5963

Morning comes early for us.

IMG_5974

After a chill breakfast of pancakes, etc., we headed to Lake George to peek around.  It was fun surprising the kids with a game of mini-golf.  What is normal to a lot of families is not normal to our “big” family.  I actually heard one of the older kids telling one of the younger kids they shouldn’t ask to play mini-golf, because it is so expensive.  It was with a tremendous amount of joy that we blew their minds pulling into the parking lot.

IMG_5977IMG_5978IMG_5979IMG_5981

Here is a photo of Johanna and Katriel with the winner of the mini-golf.

IMG_5984

(Yes; that’s me.)

IMG_5985IMG_5991

IMG_5995

IMG_5996

After golf, we parked the van and wandered around by the fort and the beach.  We tried to get ice cream there, but they were not interested in working with us to insure a peanut-free experience.

We headed back towards camp and stopped at the Stewart’s Shoppe, which provided us with amazing flavors and GREAT experience.

IMG_5998IMG_6003

Back at camp we had taco’s in a bag for lunch.

IMG_6005

And daddy found a way to set up a hammock.  I took a book to the pool so the girls could swim.

IMG_6015IMG_6027IMG_6030

We made friends with the ducks!

IMG_6033

And we had some sort of hot dog/croissant meal for dinner.
