GA to TX

Nigel, Marie, and Tab had one room, and John, Johanna, Katriel, and I had another.  We were all up early and headed down for our breakfast.

IMG_0732

We were on track for packing up and getting out and it didn’t take long to get moving.

IMG_0739

Believe it or not, there was only ONE Buc-ee’s on our route, so we made sure not to miss it.

IMG_0750

The overall drive from Greenville to Galveston is about 15 hours.  I broke our days up into nicely sized chunks to let us do some sight seeing mid-day.  Today’s overall driving was for 10 hours, but we were driving west and therefore gained an hour.

We stopped at The Cheese Cottage for lunch in Mobile, AL.

Because neither of us are big eaters, Katriel and I split a turkey and cheese club.  Everyone else had the same sandwich, but a full one.

IMG_0783

It was a cute little stop and a beautiful day.

IMG_0785

We wanted a little something to do mid-day and I had read about Fort Conde in Mobile.

IMG_0791

Access to the Fort included the Museum of Mobile, which we had not anticipated.

It was something to do, and it was amazing to read about the centuries of natural disasters that have plagued that region.

We saw the Port of Mobile where the Carnival cruise ships dock.  It was right across the street from the fort (which is a recreation).

This fort is build right above the expressway!

IMG_0820

No sooner did we get back to our van and start on our way than the sky opened up and it started to pour.  AND – our wiper was dilapidated.  We stopped by the FANCIEST Walmart I’ve ever seen, and John replaced the wiper and on we went.

IMG_0821

IMG_0847

We stopped at a Whataburger to say we did.  No one hated it, but no one begged to return.

IMG_0848

IMG_0853

A few hours later we rolled into TX.

IMG_0857

We stopped for the night in Winnie, TX, and the hotel left a little to be desired.  But it was a great deal.

IMG_0860

Here we go. A 2023 road trip and cruise.

We left town after John got home from work and the car was packed.
Stewart was not able to join us as he not only has a new job, but he also needs to save vacation days for his upcoming wedding.

Of course it rained, but that was ok.  We only had about 3.5 hours to our first overnight stop in Newnan, GA.

IMG_0712

This was my first time in Atlanta.  I have heard many horror stories about the traffic there, but thankfully we hit it just right at 8PM or so.

IMG_0719

We stayed in a Holiday Inn Express in Newnan, GA.

Billy Graham Museum

With my trip behind me and my health returning, Nan, Tabitha, Johanna, Katriel and I went to Charlotte, NC to visit the Billy Graham museum.  It was a wonderful place that exceeded my every expectatin.

IMG_9535

IMG_9536

The entire place was interactive.  It was set up so that you would moved between rooms every 6-7 minutes.  Each had its own focus.

IMG_9538

IMG_9541

This one was set up like a revival tent.

IMG_9542

This talked about his media presence.

IMG_9543

It highlighted his outreach to our elected officials.

IMG_9544

IMG_9545

IMG_9547

And his opportunities to reach out across the nations.

He and Mrs. Ruth Graham are buried on the site.

It was a slightly stressful drive as Charlotte and I-85 are no joke.  But it was a trip wholly worth making!

Another long day on the road…

And just like that, Tab’s week with Ava came to a close.
We headed back to West Virginia to meet her parents.

Now – the week before, as we’d driven back to SC, we took the route that takes us through the northeast corner of TN.  As we were driving I saw the name of a road that crossed over the expressway, and I was all but certain it was the same road that I mailed Rebecca’s Christmas card.  When I got home, I looked it up.  Lo and behold, our route goes right by my friends’ road!!!

So today, on our way back from WV, we took a 2 mile detour (that’s it… 2 miles!) and we got to stop in and see my dear friend Rebecca, her husband Dana, and two of their boys!  What a thrill!!  We text regularly, but I hadn’t seen her in well over a year.

IMG_6596

It was so good to see her beautiful house and get a real life hug.

Tab and I pushed on.

IMG_6608

Through some miserable weather.

IMG_6613

And finally made it home.

South Carolina feels more and more like home every single day!

Beach Day 2022–2nd installment

We were up and at ‘em and had lunches packed and all the girls headed to the beach for the day.
It was Ava’s first time seeing the ocean.
We were all kind of tired, but the beach was wonderful.

IMG_6567

IMG_6570IMG_6578IMG_6579

We were home in time for a late dinner.

Oh the Places We’ll Go….

On the road again – Tab and I headed to and from Weston, West Virginia today to meet up with her friend Ava to bring her down to visit for a week.

IMG_6430IMG_6436IMG_6438

Like 14 hours later we were home with Ava!

Heading home with helpers

I couldn’t skip past this – our first Buc-cee’s visit.
We all hope it is not the last!

IMG_5439

We made it to the SAV airport around 1:30PM.  We returned the cars (it was harder than we thought) and headed to the arrival concourse where we were met with three new friends from church in three vehicles.

IMG_5441

Not all heroes wear capes.

IMG_5443

After a week+ of driving a rental vehicle all over Georgia and Florida, it felt like a giant hug to climb into these waiting trucks and van and just be provided for.

IMG_5444

We were home around 5:30PM and found some food and sunk into the unpacking process.

Park Day. Focus: Favorites repeated!

Stewart and Noelle’s friend, Kyle, joined us late last evening.  He braved the massive rain and came the three hours up from his family’s new home in FL.  Once from central NY, they also relocated last year.

We started the morning with devotion – this time Johanna read the bible passages.

IMG_5229

Nan decided she’d take another day off, and the rest of headed to the parks.  Entering is now old hat.  Kyle has a season pass and he got me free parking.

IMG_5230

Hulk.  Spider-Man.  Starbucks.  Storm Force.
We did a lot of favorites a second time.

IMG_5246NELO7053IMG_5263IMG_5269IMG_5270IMG_5299IMG_5316

It was pretty hot.

IMG_5317IMG_5318IMG_5320

Marie and I opted to do another ride through Velocicoaster.  Otherwise, we kind of just all be-bopped around.

IMG_5321IMG_6041IMG_5337IMG_5338IMG_5341IMG_5345

I guess when you are done, you are done.  About 4:30PM or so we exited the park and found Stewart, Noelle and Kyle shopping.

IMG_5350

Back at the rental there was some resting, lots of packing, and dinner.

IMG_5353

Kyle’s mom had sent him with brownies and Stromboli.  It was fabulous.

IMG_5354

We weren’t trying to leave before dawn, but we needed an early start.  The plan was to meet some men from our church family at the Savannah airport around 1PM.

Blursday Chronicles–North Carolina hike

I made a friend online last summer from my Disney message board.

After we realized we’d be moving to Greenville, she and I calculated that we’d only be about 90 minutes from one another.

My girls and I were able to meet up with her and her girls in Saluda, North Carolina for a hike and lunch.

IMG_0243IMG_0254

Her oldest daughter was an expert salamander catcher, and she made Katriel’s day.

IMG_0293IMG_0295IMG_0299IMG_0300

It was so awesome to meet Michelle.  God links lives if we let Him.  A sister in the LORD in the midst of Disney talk is a special treat.
