Out of practice for a party, and other wacky stuff.

I suggested to Tabitha she have a birthday party this year.  She hasn’t had a party since she was 10.  And between Covid and moving she has done pretty close to nothing the last three years.  She hesitated. That would mean revealing the time of year she has a birthday… but in the end her friend Melody and I were able to convince her it would be fun.

So we did what all normal people do – we vacuumed the back patio.
Now – to be clear – we’ve had very few gatherings since moving in here.
And to say we needed to scale back is putting it mildly.

There would be none of this:

LORD have mercy, I miss my yard, driveway, and private property!

What did have was this:

Which made this:

IMG_0036

It only took Melody, Johanna, and I three hours to assemble.

IMG_0037

Melody had lights.

IMG_0038

And we borrowed ladder ball and corn hole.  And Melody had a fog machine, and they made a dance floor.

And some kids had fun loud fun, and some seemed quieter.

IMG_0044

And my girl said she had fun.

And I still don’t have a great photo of her and Melody!

Sweet 17…

She arrived on Easter evening all those years ago.  And her birthday fell on a Sunday again this year, too.  We’d had a very busy weekend and she declined a birthday meal.

Gifts were sparse, but joy inducing.

Though she didn’t request any special meal, we all decided she should have pizza for an early dinner.  Her sweet friend Melody arrived in time for some molten lava cake.

After that, Tab and Mel headed off for a double dose of youth groups.

That’s a thing around here, to be honest.  A lot of kids seem to visit more than one fellowship.  Since they often have friends at other congregations, it seems to work.

She likes her birthday to be low-key… but this was a little lower-key than I anticipated.

I love all my kids from the top of my head to the soles of my feet, but let me tell you, SEVENTEEN HAD BETTER BE A BETTER YEAR THAN SIXTEEN WAS!!!!   She just needs to catch a break somewhere.

Katriel’s MARVELous birthday party

We had a fabulous, Marvel-themed birthday party for Katriel.

She came up with all the games, and Mrs. Heather helped print us off some Marvel Bingo.

They made some cool obstacle courses and Hero Training ideas outside.  (The rain stopped by the time the friends came over.)

And, of course, cup cakes.

It was super cool.

The littlest Butler is 10!

I do not know how it happened.  Our sweet “Ducky” is now 10 years old!

She didn’t wait around for the family tradition of waking up the birthday kid with a song.  She wanted to be up and around for every minute of her special day.

She started her day digging into her CBS.

IMG_8791

It was “dress like a pirate day” at co-op, so she was ready for that before opening a few gifts from Nan.

IMG_8795

After a wonderful day at co-op, we had a simple dinner and did gifts.

She got a picture of a ruffed grouse from Nigel. That is her favorite bird.

IMG_8817

She was super excited to open

A JESSIE DRESS!

IMG_8825

And I love that she was also excited for

regular clothes! (with Toy Story characters)

Her request for a chocolate cake was easy to comply with.

Blessed by this beauty!

Katriel asked me weeks ago what I wanted for my birthday.
I told her I just wanted time to paint the dining room.

She took charge of that.  She announced she would make dinner on my birthday so that I would have time to paint.  She also endeavored to make my hummingbird cake.

Daddy helped a little.

IMG_7936IMG_7938

It was the yummiest pasta and sausage and cake I have ever had.

Happy Birthday to me–festive like!

Firstly – daddy had the day off.
Secondly – co op is over.
Thirdly – only Nigel had to work in the evening.

Let’s make up for last year’s non-birthday.  (It wasn’t bad – we were just tooo busy.)

After a leisurely morning and a little school with Tab we headed to the Greenville Zoo to have one more visit before our annual pass expires.  It was sunny, dry, and in the 50’s.  The zoo was quite decorated and it was Dad and Tab’s first visit there.

It is much smaller than Seneca Park Zoo, and doesn’t have as many animals.  But they are different and they do try.

IMG_7876

The lions were very vocal, too.

IMG_7877IMG_7879

They have an awesome set of playgrounds, too!

IMG_7888

We went home for a while and ate pizza.
Johanna, Tabitha, Katriel, John and I went up to Bob Jones University for their Christmas Festival.  It included SO many activities for families.  Concerts. Food Trucks.  Tree Lighting.

IMG_7893IMG_7895IMG_7898IMG_7899IMG_7902IMG_7904

We ducked indoors for a Blue Grass concert.  Stewart and Marie arrived while we were in there.  They were very accomplished musicians.

IMG_7907

Then we listened to an outdoor concert by some Velos students.

IMG_7910

We found more treats, and then watched a movie by Answers in Genesis.

IMG_7913

Then we joined in a campus wide carol sing and lighting of the trees.

IMG_7914IMG_7918IMG_7920

Lastly, we headed over to the smores, and the alumni market place.

IMG_7925IMG_7929IMG_7931

It was SUCH a fun and festive birthday.  Hopefully we can attend this again next year and Nigel can join us.

Stewart is 22

He had no special request for dinner, but he did ask for cheesecake.

IMG_6896IMG_6902

We tried some new ice cream that disappointed.

IMG_6903

Having him with us to celebrate another year was not disappointing.  I love this spurt of time together even though he is such a grown up.

Finally–cheesecake for Marie

It was a busy week.
Marie was patient waiting for her birthday celebration.
She requested, and received, Oreo cheesecake.

IMG_6710

Her gifts from mom and dad included three packages.  Each one had a small construction paper cut out of an article of clothing.  I will take her shopping and she can find a few outfits for college.  BJU has a dress code, and it will be fun doing our first ever “Back to School” shopping.

Marie is 18

This poor girl!  Last year, on her 17th birthday, we were packing up the house all around her.  She also was in the midst of a month where she couldn’t taste anything!

This year – it’s her 18th birthday – and we are up to our ears in VBS and other craziness!

FETY6817

Daddy took her to Silver Bay Seafood for a lovely dinner.

We will celebrate as a family on the weekend.
