Just another day in June

We’ve been starting every morning with school for Hanny.  Reading.  Clocks.  Math.  Writing.  In our experience taking time off those first few years only makes September that much harder.  It’s worth an hour a few mornings a week to keep at it.

Clocks aren’t easy, but she is working so hard at it.

Mid-afternoon Katriel asked me, “Can we ‘nuggle, Mama?”

Oh yes, baby, we can always make time to ‘nuggle.

IMG_7406

As it was, I had time to ‘nuggle, because I didn’t have to make any dinner.  We used gift cards to eat dinner at Olive Garden for a pre-Father’s Day celebration before John went to Germany for work.

Home for presents and cake.

Dad and Tab dinner.

Ba and Poppy, Nan and Nene joined us for Alfredo pasta and chicken.
I won’t recall the frantic last minute trips to Walmart or the grill fire.

It wasn’t the first birthday dinner Daddy shared with Tabby.

Oh – LOL.

Mickey Mouse Tie Dye Shirts

We did matching Mickey head tie dye shirts for our Disney cruise in 2014.  They came out great and most are still in really good shape.  We can’t wear them again, however, because the kids all grew.

In the fall I did matching crown shirts for the females in our group.  I did extra sizes so that if we wanted to wear them again in a year or two we can.

Today John and I completed some Mickey head tie dye shirts for our upcoming trip.  Again, I did a few extra sizes in case we want to wear them again in a year or two.

This project actually started last summer.  My mom and sister found their own tanks at Kohls.  I started with picking up white t-shirts at the end of the summer whenever I saw them.  I managed to get nicely made shirts for Marie, John, the boys, and I at JCP for $4 each.  I found the younger girls’ shirts at WalMart for $3 and $4 a piece, depending on the size.  I stored them in my closet until the timing was right.

The shirts were washed and dried before work on them began.

The next step was the most tedious of all.  I had to trace Mickey heads on each shirt and sew around the shape with waxed dental floss.

Once the dental floss is all around the head, I pulled the floss to create a little bunch of fabric.

Then I wrapped a rubber band around the “Mickey head” that poofed out.
Our work area was in the laundry room.  John brought in a large table and we covered it with a drop cloth.

We got the shirts wet in warm clean water and twisted them in a spiral shape, keeping the “Head” protruding out.

We then soaked the shirts in soda ash for 30 minutes and got individual bags ready for storing them.

John held each shirt over the sink as I squirted onto the “head”.  Then we placed each shirt on its bag and filled in the rest of the colors.
THAT was the easy part.

These photos are from 2013 when we did a similar project.  I did not take photos this year, I guess.  Sad smile

We knew from our last time doing this project that we had been too careful with our dyes and could have used more.  We applied the dye more generously this time.  We could have stood to be still MORE generous, we learned.

We tied them off in individual bags and stored them in a box on the floor.  This photo is also from 2013.

We let them soak four days this time around, as opposed to 24 hours the last time.  This was because we were too busy to get back to them again until Thursday night.

Pretty cool, huh?

Corn maze day

We pass the farm market just about any time we go somewhere.
The season was coming to an end, so the kids asked if we could take a run over.
The weekday schedule just did NOT have any room.  But Dad made time Saturday morning.
Good thing – as it was the last day of the season!  (hmmmmm – sounds familiar…. did the same thing last year!)

Those summer nights…

We FINALLY made time to pull out the fire pit and get busy with s’mores.
But since we’d seen how the mosquitoes had made a meal out of Katriel  last week, some of the kids got serious about covering up.

We’d waited until Katriel went to bed, as I’m weird about fire and fast moving toddlers.
We ate way too many calories, as I told the kids stories of our trip to Kenya in 1998.
It was fun.  Really fun.

Daddy’s birthday

Daddy had to travel on his birthday, so we celebrated a day early.
He had helpers for his gifts.

And we ate some of the cupcakes from Tab’s party to celebrate in his absence.

A Day at the Zoo (2015)

It was a Sunday without commitments.
It was a Sunday with warmer temperatures.
It was a Sunday to get out of the house so it wouldn’t be wasted on yard work.
It was a ZOO DAY.
It’s been more than a year since the kids and I visited the zoo.
It’s been more than a few years since John has been to the zoo.

The place was crowded, but not unpleasantly so.
There were a few new animals, and all of them seemed new to Katriel.

And while the kids took a number of photos of the animals, my favorite subjects are by far my own monkeys…

Katriel sincerely enjoyed this guy.  Gal?  Thing?
Ugh.

I think he liked her, too.

The woman I handed the camera too gave us gobs of headroom and cut off our feet..  but it crops out ok, I guess.
LOL – I still have some church bling on!  😉

Vending machine ice cream bars are fun, too.

On the way home we went through the car wash.  Most of the kids have never been through the car wash before, and those who have been have forgotten it.  We sure are a FUN bunch!

We ordered pizza on the way home and called it an adventure day.

Friendly competition

With no major project slated for the two-week break we took over the holidays (um, the kitchen update left us too broke to take on our pending master bedroom project), we had to come up with other ways to entertain ourselves.
Somewhere along the line we though up Monopoly…
We started our first game ever that first night around 7 PM.  Next thing I knew John was excusing himself at 8:15 PM to put Hanny and Katriel to bed.  THEN the next thing I knew it was 10:20 PM!  For! Real!  I decided that we’d have to just end the game at 11 PM, because, well, do I really NEED a because???

Tabby was the first to go out… but she played well against these vultures.
IMG_1362 IMG_1363
We played multiple times over the course of the second week of vacation.  It was mostly fun.  Mostly.
How did we manage this with our two too-young-for-Monopoly-girlies?
Well, we tried to do it during Katriel’s naptime.  And Johanna would just play dolls near us.

Or… in the case of at least two evening games I know of…

IMG_1344
Heh – thanks technology!
But don’t worry.  We played LOTS of Princess-friendly games, as well, over our break.
She’s a CandyLand queen!
