Easter 2019

The morning started with a basket hunt, as always.
Despite the fact that John and I believed that all the good spots had been overused over the years, it still took the kids a long, long time to find their baskets.  WTG Mom and Dad.  The big kids didn’t want early morning photos shared of themselves.

Church had the kids join the choir for two songs.  Or maybe the choir joined the kids?

We had a family photo in the church lot.  I wish I’d had my good camera and not just the phone.  I’d blow this up in a heartbeat.

After a scrappy lunch of leftovers we did an outside egg hunt.  It was chilly, but after a cold winter it was tolerable for a little while.

Stewart and Marie have a thing going.  For the last two years they’ve tried to recreate a pose from 2017.

LOL.  I think 2019 came closer.

Room update

A YEAR ago Thanksgiving weekend, John and I were discussing Stewart’s asthma and how it had seemingly been getting worse.  Was it is busy college schedule?  Was he not eating well?  Sleeping well?  And then, as I stood at the stove, stirring dinner, it was 100% clear.

“He’s been in his new room since summer and that room still has the original carpet!”  What is more, that room had a rabbit in it when we visited [in 2007] to inspect the house.  Stewart is allergic to rabbits.

So – we ripped out the carpet that weekend and he’s had nothing but an area rug over the subfloor ever since.

We decided to use some of John’s vacation time to have him spend two days doing the new floor.

Mama could hardly stand to look at that empty room with a new floor and old paint!  So she convinced everyone to let her paint the room.

Tab helped me prep it.

IMG_3370

And a quick paint job it was.  From here on out, I’ve decreed that bedrooms for anyone over 12 years old just get a neutral color!  I believe we will have musical bedrooms for the next 10 years as kids come and go to college!

My kind of pile on.

I don’t know the last time I shared a snuggle of sorts with Stewart.  But something possessed him to join me in the green chair as he came in from college.  Katriel had just vacated the spot next to mommy and I was honored to have him squeeze in.

I blows my mind I have an adult child.  He comes and goes with work (three jobs) and school and friends and a rare activity.

So a five minute snuggle…

is priceless.

Sweets from Stewart

Stewart has been crazy busy.  He is working 30+ hours a week at two different jobs, and school has resumed.  He’s tired of hearing us say how much we miss him, but we don’t mean it as an accusation.  They just genuinely miss him.

When we woke up this morning, Stewart had left treats for each of us on the table.

Later, Katriel and Johanna decided to search through the dress-up clothes.  Katriel was delighted to put together a whole lion costume!

(Somehow) Stewart is 18!

I’m not sure where the days have gone, but somehow, my little boy is 18 years old.
He started his day at a different church service than the one the family attended as he has been doing some video work for a pastor in Newark.

Dinner was something new; I tried to make steak fajitas.  They were pretty good.

It was beautifully HOT outside, so we opted to open gifts in the crowded living room.

Johanna made him a penguin card.

The boy who made me a mommy, made her a grandma.

IMG_1635

We tried EIGHT times to get a decent photo.  Someone was always being silly.

There was nothing silly about lemon cake.  From scratch.  Oh snap.

College Visit #2

College Visit #1 was to Houghton a few weeks ago.  We didn’t take any pictures.  Today’s visit to Canisius got a photo, if only because it seemed noteworthy that we walked around Buffalo in the rain.  It’s just funny to me.  Because it is Buffalo, and it is raining.

Stewart’s graduation

I am pausing in my trip report to back track to Stewart’s graduation day.  (It was also the day for Nigel and Marie’s recital, but that will be its own entry once I get the video from my sister [who is out of town herself.])
Many years ago, before I’d taken an actual looooong distance road trips, I had offered to my friend the analogy that homeschooling was like a road trip.  Those early years of homeschooling were really, really hard at times.  We had lots of little kids and the blessing of new babies and the landscape of homeschooling changed not year-to-year, but often day-to-day.  Just getting through the basics of meals and housekeeping can keep a mom of a smaller family pretty busy, but adding homeschooling and babies to the picture offered me challenges that I was not always equipped for.
After a tough week, I remember talking to a non-homeschooling friend and likening it to a road trip:
Some days are as though you are stuck in traffic, or construction, or on a pot-hole invested room behind a garbage truck.  Or the rain is driving down and the wipers aren’t working and you missed your exit.  Thankfully, this is not the bulk of it.
Some days are highlights.  These are like when you are at the beach, or the theme park, or the museum, or that restaurant.  There are more of these days, thankfully.
But a lot of the days?  Hmmm – well – in fact, MOST of the days are like when you are working down the highway.  Tires rotating, mile after mile, as you make progress toward the destination.  Churning and working at it.  There are some noteworthy things you want to remember – you snap a picture or two – but you keep on moving.  You clock in progress as you steadfastly pursue the goal.
As Stewart’s graduation came into view my mind could not help but recall details of the last 13 years.  Too many to record in a post, but surprisingly easy to call up in my mind.  The tears over math.  The giggles over home-made productions.  The read-alouds, the field trips, the science projects.  The lectures and the laughter.  And so many hugs.
May was so busy with me working a ton.  And with the Big Road Trip looming, there was a lot on my planning plate. Somehow we preserved graduation weekend and worked at it together.  And before we knew it – there we were – John, Stewart, and I, driving toward the Geneva for the ceremony.
The last leg of our trip.
I can not tell you how many times I have fallen head first into Galatians 6:9 –

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Somehow – by the grace of God – we did not give up.  I had some flashes of giving up before grade 9… Oh Jesus – THANK YOU FOR SUSTAINING US!

Skin testing – 2018

It’s probably been 13 years since the last full-blown skin testing.

IMG_8480

We had some surprises.

IMG_8488

Turns out he *might* not be allergic to peas, some beans, and some nuts anymore, and possibly not soy.  We will have to pray about and plan how to proceed with doing oral challenges.

A few things scored very low, but should have been high….  so she did subq testing… ah ha – he still has a ton of environmental allergies.  We plan to do immunotherapy this summer to hopefully get him off some of his daily medications.  This makes sense in a few ways – both physiologically and financially.  We have some decent medical coverage and he may not in as a young man.  If we move through this now, we could both relieve his respiratory concerns, and alleviate the need to purchase daily medications the rest of his life.

Flower City Work Camp ~ 2018

Last week one of my kids asked me, “Mom, why are you always so busy?”
I replied, “Because you are, honey.”

You being plural, of course.

I firmly believe in being engaged in what they do.  The last few years the boys have done FCWC.  I was part of a Sidewalk Club last year and resumed my role this year.

John had his first year as a Worksite Leader.

Stewart’s college classes interfered with him taking part in the traditional way, but he was able to plug in to helping with some of the A/V needs and getting to hear some sermons.

Nigel was eager to do another year on a worksite, and we twisted Marie’s arm to participate this year.

IMG_8015

It was ridiculously cold.  And we endured one nasty, NASTY windstorm Wednesday.

IMG_8130

Marie ended up coming home early because she was not feeling well.  She even fell asleep at her worksite…

IMG_8149

I don’t have a good photo of Nigel, but every time I saw him he was grinning ear-to-ear.

IMG_8252IMG_8258

It was pretty wonderful.
