Commando Day 2-Hollywood Studios

We were on the road a little after 7AM with a quick stop at Walmart which was conveniently located between our house and WDW.

We cleared security by 7:49AM

We were about a dozen people back from the tapstiles at 7:57AM.

IMG_0219IMG_0222

I had the stroller and was about the fourth “row” back from the rope, with the rest of my party at the front of the rope or just behind them in the second “row.”

Each girl was invited out to welcome the crowd.  Katriel went first, but I only recorded hers as a video.

IMG_0225

Behind us was an amazing sea of human beings.

IMG_0228

I tried to take a photo or two as we were walked to Toy Story Land at 8:53AM

IMG_0237

I started to get pushed further and further back and then had to park my stroller, no less.

IMG_0240IMG_0243

My family was all separated and I started to wonder if I would even try for the ride through.

IMG_0248IMG_0249IMG_0250

In the end, the girls ended up riding in the third train out, and Nan and Nene in the fourth and me in the sixth.

IMG_0252

It was an amazing ride.  I was off by 9:11 AM.

Katriel spotted Jessie, whom she was dressed as, so we queued in her line.  Kelly, Marie, Johanna and Nan rode Alien Swirling Saucers.

DSC_0223DSC_0225DSC_0229DSC_0231DSC_0236

I took some photos as Tab waited in line with Katriel.

DSC_0240

Today Marie bounded as Snow White and Tab as Bolt.  The family actually got off the line before we met Jessie.

DSC_0241

It was finally time to meet Jessie.

DSC_0248DSC_0251DSC_0263DSC_0272DSC_0274

We headed over to use our first FPP for Rock N Roller Coaster.  Everyone but Nan went on.  Then Marie and Kelly went to Tower of Terror and the rest of us went to watch Lightning McQueen Racing Academy and Beauty and the Beast.  While in there, I got a text from Nigel that he’d just been advised that the class for spring semester he was on the wait list for now had room.  I missed part of the show registering him… LOL.

DSC_0282DSC_0285DSC_0290DSC_0305IMG_0274IMG_0279IMG_0283

Marie and Kelly missed their chance to tap into Beauty and Beast and therefore didn’t discharge their FPP.  I had to visit a Guest Experience Team Kiosk to get it off.  I didn’t want to wait to see if it fell off, because I wanted to grab some same day FPP at the 12:01PM drop.

We ate lunch while watching the Star Wars stage show and tapped in to our FPP for Frozen Sing-a-Long 6 minutes early.  Kelly’s phone worked better than mind, so we poised ourselves to grab FPP at 12:01PM and got a set of Toy Story Midway Mania for later.  Then we sat back and enjoyed the sing along.  It had a slightly holiday tweaked theme that made it a lot of fun.

IMG_0295IMG_0296IMG_0304IMG_0321

From there we enjoyed Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular and then Muppets.  It was only 66F.  I don’t think I’ve mentioned yet that the weather forecast started tanking just after we got to Florida…

IMG_0323

We headed back to Toy Story Land for our Fast Pass.
IMG_0324IMG_0325

We were off the ride by 2:40PM so I picked up another set for later.  I could have had FPP for Slinky Dog again for three of us, but try as I might I couldn’t get all seven of us back on.

IMG_0327

From there we went to explore Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.  Kelly had a reservation for Oga’s Cantina (no way we could get one for all of us) at 3:55PM.

IMG_0331IMG_0332

DSC_0306DSC_0313DSC_0315DSC_0320DSC_0325

While she visited the Cantina we went and met Olaf.

DSC_0330DSC_0333DSC_0337DSC_0339DSC_0341

She texted us when she was done and some of them rode Star Tours while Nan and I shopped a little.

We then had an early dinner.  It’s an unpopular restaurant, but we’ve enjoyed Backlot Express in the past.  I like they have refills on the pop so we ate there again.

IMG_0334IMG_0335

After dinner we decided we’d wait the 50 minutes to ride Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run.  We boarded around 6:05PM.  It was the Best decision.  We had a blast!!  I think it helps a lot that our family filled the capsule and we loved cheering and yelling to one another.  Even the little two who have never seen a movie were totally into it.

When we were done the park had been plunged into darkness.  We headed back to Toy Story Land to start our hunt for treats and ride Toy Story Midway Mania again.  It is such a great ride.

IMG_0386IMG_0390

Nene bought Katriel a refillable popcorn bucket.  Johanna and I found treats at Starbucks.

IMG_0392

My carrot cake “cookie” was every bit as amazing as I’d been advised and was honestly too big for me to finish myself.

IMG_0394

This was my second day in a row enjoying a Venti Cafe Mocha.

IMG_0399IMG_0401IMG_0406

Katriel and I rode Alien Swirling Saucers that we’d missed in the AM.

IMG_0408

At 8:31PM we went to enjoy some projections.  The park was wonderfully uncrowded.  There was lots of room as people continued to arrive right up until the fireworks started.

IMG_0409IMG_0412IMG_0429

Guests remained seated for the Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam which started at 9.

IMG_0432

These blew us away.  So many lesser known Disney movies were included in the show.  It was exceptional, in our opinions.

IMG_0433IMG_0440

We headed out around 9:15PM

Commando Day 1–Magic Kingdom

I was awake before my 5AM alarm.  I was up and at ‘em and started morning prep.  Kelly and Nan were up by 6AM and then it was time to get the girls up.  Our plan for this day was to Disneybound as the characters from Winnie the Pooh.

Breakfast at 6:33 AM.

IMG_0115

IMG_0119

On our way I got in the wrong lane and got us a little behind.

IMG_0122IMG_0123IMG_0124

We finally got to the Transportation and Ticket Center and got on the proper monorail, only to have it experience technical difficulties.  We were instructed to disembark at the Polynesian Resort and told to stay close to the security area so that we would be able to re-enter the next monorail as soon as it arrived.  All of these delays were messing with our ability to be first in line to Rope Drop the 7 Dwarfs Mine Train ride we hoped to Rope Drop.

We finally got to Magic Kingdom and did not stop to properly admire any of the decorations.  We hurried to the spot people were queuing for RD.  After I stood there a few minutes and processed our position, I decided to forgo this plan for this morning.

IMG_0130

We moved over to the Adventureland side of the Hub and waited over there until they RDed around 8:50AM.

IMG_0132IMG_0133IMG_0134

From there we headed to Splash Mountain because Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was closed.

I got soaked!

IMG_0138IMG_0139IMG_0140

We then went to use our first FPP for Jungle Jingle Cruise, which was EXCELLENT.  We had the funniest skipper.

IMG_0142IMG_0148

DSC_0006IMG_0176

We waited a whopping 7 or 8 minutes for Magic Carpets of Aladdin and some were complaining… We’ve been spoiled.

DSC_0008

IMG_0152

We went to Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and then decided to eat our lunch.  I admit that at first I was willing to acknowledge that it is a little “sad” or even “pathetic” to pack a lunch.  Nuh – uh.  No way.  It is now my favorite thing.  Our breaks were super short.  No ordering and waiting, etc.,  It was so easy.

IMG_0155IMG_0156

We went and rode Dumbo and from the air my girls spotted Pluto coming out.  So as soon as we got off we headed directly over to where he was walking.

We were the only ones in that area, and he quickly engaged Katriel.  They danced and then he walked her up and around to a closed food trailer.  He pretended to want to eat something.  It was a few minutes before anyone else joined our grouping.

DSC_0011DSC_0013DSC_0015

DSC_0025

DSC_0030DSC_0035

IMG_0157

We finished our visit with him and then went inside to meet Goofy and Donald.

DSC_0038DSC_0049

We rode the Little Mermaid ride and opted to skip Tea Cups.

Around 2PM we decided to find some treats.

J and K went for the Arenedelle Aqua ice cream – cotton candy flavored with Mickey Head candies.

IMG_0169IMG_0171

M had a Minnie’s Gingerbread treat.

IMG_0172IMG_0173

We had done so much already, we decided to bite the bullet and queue for the 7  Dwarfs Mine Train.

IMG_0178

And after 50 minutes we were next up for the ride.

And it went down.

They made multiple announcements about it being down and many people left the line.  We stayed put.  After about 10 minutes they now announced it was down and everyone would get FPP for later.  The park was only open until 6PM so we weren’t sure if we’d get to use them or not.

We queued to meet Pooh Bear and Tigger.  This took a long time, but there was no way we wanted to miss meeting them.

DSC_0060DSC_0064DSC_0070

Kelly and Marie went to ride Haunted Mansion and the rest of us went to meet Tiana and Rapunzel.  They were both excellent and engaging.

IMG_0185IMG_0188

DSC_0084DSC_0087DSC_0090DSC_0095DSC_0096

IMG_0191

Tab and I decided we wanted our treats for the day.  She wanted an iced coffee and I wanted a Dole Whip.

IMG_0194IMG_0196

At 5PM we decided again to try 7 Dwarves and we were on in just a few minutes.

IMG_0197IMG_0199

As we inched closer to closing time we rode the Tomorrowland Speedway and looked on in excitement as they started to roll out the special items for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP) starting at 7PM.  We had tickets for Thursday, 11/14.

DSC_0108DSC_0109DSC_0112DSC_0113DSC_0114DSC_0116DSC_0117DSC_0120DSC_0127DSC_0131DSC_0133DSC_0134DSC_0135DSC_0142DSC_0143DSC_0144DSC_0145DSC_0148

IMG_0201IMG_0202

We left at 6PM and rode the monorail around and around.  LOL.  It seemed that way.

We went to the Contemporary Resort to look at decorations (not many yet) and have dinner.  Dinner was really good and the Cast Member (CM) helped me work our meals to maximize food for the two youngest at the cheapest price point.

DSC_0151DSC_0152DSC_0155DSC_0156

From there we rode around to the Grand Floridian which was beautiful.  For just a moment I could actually catch myself wishing we were staying in such a luxurious hotel.  It was gorgeous.

DSC_0160DSC_0161DSC_0165DSC_0169DSC_0171DSC_0183

Then I remembered that behind each door was a hotel room and how much I don’t love hotel rooms, and it wasn’t so hard to not want to stay there anymore…

DSC_0190DSC_0191

A cast member noticed us admiring the tile work in the floor and then proceeded to give us a tour.  Meanwhile the band was extraordinary.  I’m glad we stopped here!

DSC_0193DSC_0196DSC_0198DSC_0200DSC_0201DSC_0202DSC_0203DSC_0204DSC_0206DSC_0208DSC_0209DSC_0211DSC_0213DSC_0214DSC_0215DSC_0216

Finally we circled back to the Transportation and Ticket Center and took a parting picture of each girl next to the character she had bounded for the day. ♥

DSC_0219

And we’re off (to Florida)!

Late last summer Marie mentioned how she would love to see Walt Disney World at Christmas time.  I quickly responded with, “I’m sure we will, someday.”  Then I realized that once she started at community college she wouldn’t be able to leave during the holiday season.  Or she’d be limited to the school breaks, which would mean terrible crowds.  So I started to do some research into what it would cost to visit WDW in the 2019 Christmas season.  The numbers looked doable, so I just set to pray about it.

In December 2019, I heard about Traveling Homeschoolers from a friend at church.

In February, the dates and prices were posted on the Traveling Homeschoolers website.  They were traveling in November and were affordable.  I had to wait for airfare costs.  I booked a campsite on Disney property (which we would never actually stay at) to allow for early access to Fast Passes (FPP).

In May, Southwest posted their fares and they were out of my budget.  I looked again a week later and they were now in my range!

Meanwhile, I churned 5 credit cards to earn money to cover many of the costs.

In August, I found a rental house that exceeded my expectations for the low budget I set.

Autoslash helped me to find a rental van in our range.

We told the girls in September.

Monday morning I drove John to work at 6:30 AM.  I came home and placed grocery orders for ALDI and Walmart in the 34747 zip code to be delivered to our rental house in the evening.

At 10:30 AM I picked up Nan and Kelly, and then we picked up John.  He had us to the airport by 11:10 AM.

IMG_0052IMG_0054IMG_0060IMG_0076

They watched Toy Story 4 while I watched Endgame.

IMG_0079

We navigated MCO easily.

IMG_0080

We found our rental car, but had to really WORK to get all our luggage into the Dodge Caravan.

We headed to Kissimmee area for Chick-fil-A.

IMG_0093

Then a quick stop at a junky Dollar Tree and off to our rental house on Santee Drive.

IMG_0094IMG_0095IMG_0096IMG_0097IMG_0098IMG_0099IMG_0100IMG_0101IMG_0102IMG_0103

Our rental stroller was already there, and our groceries came right on time.

We dug into making lunches for the next day.

IMG_0109

Originally our goal was to make lunches each of the first five days in an effort to save money, and then we would buy lunches toward the end of vacation.  I wanted to make sure we could buy some of the special (and $) treats Disney makes.

We hit bed around 9:30 PM.  I shared with Johanna.  Nan and Katriel had a room.  Marie and Tab had a room.  And Kelly had her own room.

Christmas in September

The mercury says 80F, but the living room looked deceptively winter-esque as we celebrated Christmas early this year.

We borrowed Nigel’s tree and set it up.

IMG_9092

Johanna and Marie made reindeer cupcakes.

IMG_9094

And after dinner the girls dug into a scavenger hunt.

IMG_9095

Clues pointed us along the way.

IMG_9096

When you’re cold and you’re wet,
It is nice to get dry.
When you put this together
Then we can fly.

Their first clue led them to the dryer where they found a glider airplane.

IMG_9098IMG_9100

It’s round and it’s orange,
And grows on a tree.
It came from the place
Where I want to be.

Next they located an orange in the pantry with another clue.

IMG_9102IMG_9104

Night brings out what’s festive,
Now you can be, too.
We may even see friends
Who are special to you.

Then they found some glow wands and glow sticks nestled under Disney friends.

IMG_9107IMG_9108

IMG_9110

Clue four led them to Mickey bars in the garage fridge.

IMG_9113

If you haven’t guessed it,
Please don’t have fears.
Open the box for your
New pair of ____________

IMG_9123

Their last clue led them to sparkly Minnie Mouse ears.

IMG_9130

Mama, Marie, Tabitha, Johanna, and Katriel will be heading to Florida this November for a Christmas-season peek at Walt Disney World.  Nan and Nene will also be joining us.  Stewart, Nigel and John will not be able to fit the trip into their schedules.

Last year Marie mentioned how she would love to see WDW decked out for Christmas.  I realized this fall would be the last time she had a flexible schedule; she will most likely be enrolled at FLCC next year.  Though nothing about Disney is cheap, we were able to get tickets through Traveling Homeschoolers, and I patiently stalked Southwest until I could get affordable airfare.  We rented a lovely four bedroom house near Disney, and God answered my prayer for an affordable rental van.

This will be the first time Johanna and Katriel fly, and the first time Marie and Tab fly since 2007; they were 3 and 1 at that time.

Nigel was in on the secret.  He played along as he opened HIS gift.

IMG_9118IMG_9120

Raisins and spoons.  (It is a LOOOOOONG time Butler joke.)

He and Daddy will likely have a blast having the house to themselves.

Creation Museum

I got up early and headed to Walmart for some groceries.  We had a fast breakfast and headed about 40 minutes away to the Creation Museum.  John had been there before for a short visit when he was on a business trip to Cincinnati.  This was our first family trip.

IMG_8668IMG_8670IMG_8682IMG_8684IMG_8694IMG_8698IMG_8704IMG_8708IMG_8709IMG_8710IMG_8711IMG_8751

My photos are so lame.  But we really enjoyed it.

We went back to the house where we vegged out.

IMG_8755

And ate a yummy dinner of microwaved pulled pork and, wait for it,

IMG_8758

mac and cheese.

IMG_8759

NOLA cruise ship embarkation

We didn’t need to set our alarms for Saturday morning, and we all enjoyed a solid night’s sleep after the overnight drive the day before.  Nonetheless, we were up early-ish.  We got ourselves together and packed up and headed to the kitchen area of the hotel for breakfast by 7:30 A.M..  It wasn’t awful or remarkable.  I DID have the best cup of coffee I’ve had in a while!

We hoped to find some NOLA type items in the local Walmart around 9:30 A.M., but left empty handed.  We also tried a drug store nearer to the city and port, but again had nothing to show for it.  I figured we’d certainly find something in shopping center around the port, but as we approached the parking garage the signage was just so convincing to head into directly into the parking ramp and before we knew it we were parking the van!

This is one of the most fun ports I’ve ever arrived at.  You can see the ship in the Mississippi River as you come over the bridge.

IMG_7764IMG_7765

Pulling into the garage, porters come directly to your vehicle and unload your tagged luggage.  For us, however, with such a large vehicle and so much luggage, our porter directed us to an emptier area of the garage and walked over to meet  us there.

IMG_7772

IMG_7775

The older four kids took their documents and John and the little girls and I took ours and we split into our two cabin groups to navigate the boarding.  My group finished a bit before theirs and we held on just past security until they caught up.  We arrived to the terminal about 30 minutes before our pre-scheduled boarding; but remarkably, we were ushered right onto our lovely vessel.  The gangway was the most convoluted one I’ve been on with lots of twists and turns, but that just built the enthusiasm for me.

IMG_7777

We got on board AND…

sat?

It took me a moment or two to start collecting my brain and make some decisions about which way to go first.  It was just after 11AM and our state room wouldn’t be ready until 1:30PM or so.

IMG_7782

We headed up to the Lido deck and made our first stop at the fro-yo.  There were two fro-yo stations on opposite sides of the ship and many-a-Butler visited often.

IMG_7784IMG_7793

There were many dining options available in and around the buffet, and I made my first of many visits to the Blue Iguana.

IMG_7794

We split up again to explore the ship.

IMG_7796

We visited the Camp Ocean and got the girls their bands.  We weren’t sure at that point how often they might visit, but we were glad to get band assignment taken care of.

IMG_7798IMG_7799IMG_7803

It was finally time to find our staterooms and unpack.  This is the last time their stateroom looked clean…

IMG_7807

They were plenty big.  We were on deck two, starboard, with connecting ocean view staterooms.  They were perfect for our family.

IMG_7808IMG_7809IMG_7811

I got my hacks working…

IMG_7812

and we hung our still wet swimwear from the night before and change into our other suits.

IMG_7813

We missed our chances to get drinks before our muster drill (the thing where they tell you what to do in an emergency) and we were all hot and cranky…

BUT

THEN

We set sail at 4:00 P.M.

Out on deck and hydration finally underway, we found some loungers and saw the Cat in the Hat and Thing 1 and Thing 2 come out.

IMG_7816

So we went down to dance with them a little.

IMG_7818IMG_7825

Marie and Tab tried out the one slide.  It was actually very entertaining as I would find out a few days later.

IMG_7826IMG_7839

They were willing to make us some non-alcoholic “mocktails” with our soda packages.  Because the first 7 hours of the cruise actually take place in the Mississippi River, we had to pay taxes on all our drinks until we hit international waters.  One weird thing about sailing from NOLA.  It was a few cents per person.

IMG_7840

Lots of lounging and hot tubs and a little bit of swimming and somehow it got to be dinner time.

We really do like dressing up for dinner on the cruises, but I admit I was far less creative in coordinating our clothes this time around.  At least they were all clean.  I think.

IMG_7842IMG_7844IMG_7846

Table 656 was our dinner zone for the next five nights.  Our head server was John Alex and he helped Stewart order meals for the following night after dinner each evening.

IMG_7849

My blurry, but delicious strawberry soup.

IMG_7852

Candied salmon, which was a one-bite-and-done.

IMG_7853

Catfish – my new favorite thing.

IMG_7854

Some very excellent tiramisu.  I love tiramisu!  I fully believe this was the best I’d ever had (and I’ve had some fabulous tiramisu!).

IMG_7855

Carnival’s famous chocolate melting cake.  I ordered this more nights than not.  (Yes – I did have more than one dessert most nights!)

IMG_7856

We enjoyed a gorgeous sunset as we navigated out the Mississippi River.  We split up some, again, and I’m not even sure what all we did.

IMG_7858IMG_7861IMG_7863IMG_7864

I believe J and K visited the Club Ocean, and I think we just lounged around.

IMG_7865

The skies were gorgeous as we moved out to sea, but I think we were all in bed by 10/11 PM.

Travel day

I drove from about 9PM Thursday until 3AM Friday.  Tab moved to shotgun to keep me company and Marie was awake most of the time just behind us.  John slept in the back, Nigel slept in what we call the “hopper” seat, and Stewart snored away just behind me.  The little girls shared the little bench.

On one hand, now that everyone is “older” there isn’t that desperate feeling to get the little ones to sleep.
On the other hand, now that everyone is bigger, it is harder for them physically to sleep.

IMG_7587

But something about vacation makes it all tolerable – dare I say adventurous – so we made the best of it.

At 3ish, I went to the back to sleep.  It was no where near as comfortable as the old van, but I did manage about 2.5 hours.  John estimated he slept about 4.

The plan was to stop for breakfast around 7AM at a Cracker Barrel, as I’d learned recently they’ve upped their game with food allergies.  We were inside Tennessee when that happened.

IMG_7598

It took three tries to get that photo as I was a little addled after so little sleep.

Breakfast was okay.

IMG_7602IMG_7603

Some meals were better than others.  No one left hungry.

IMG_7604

Marie had catfish.  This was no where near the most exotic thing she ate on vacation. (Stay tuned!)

IMG_7606

We can now add Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana to our list of states.

IMG_7617IMG_7626

As we neared New Orleans, we took the bridge over Lake Pontchartrain.  I’ve seen this giant lake on maps all my life and it was exciting to see it in real life.

IMG_7631

Though we were tired, I pulled the mom card and had us do a tour.  I could not green light the idea of just going to the hotel.  I knew once there we’d just flop in front of TVs or electronics and not actually SEE any part of Louisiana.

I’d learned before our trip about how many plantations were in the region and picked one that had a long history, and was close to our hotel.

IMG_7634IMG_7635IMG_7636IMG_7637IMG_7643IMG_7644IMG_7669IMG_7670IMG_7671IMG_7672IMG_7673

We learned that French plantations were different from Colonial plantations.  Not better.  Not worse.  Just different.

IMG_7674IMG_7675

This plantation once covered thousands of acres from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain and was a major supplier of indigo.

IMG_7676IMG_7677IMG_7678IMG_7679IMG_7680IMG_7681IMG_7682IMG_7684IMG_7686IMG_7688IMG_7689

It was also very warm out.  I think it was 94F or so.

IMG_7690IMG_7693IMG_7694IMG_7695IMG_7696IMG_7697

These trees scream Louisiana to me!

IMG_7698IMG_7700

Admit it.  You’re thinking Bayou, too, huh?

IMG_7701

We all kept looking for alligators.

IMG_7703

When we left for our hotel we criss crossed the Mississippi River.  Hey friend!  Remember me?  I dipped my hands in in 2015 in St. Louis!

IMG_7706

We had two rooms in a LaQuinta in Boutte, LA.  John and I bunked with Johanna and Katriel.  The big four had their own double room up on another floor altogether.

IMG_7707

We dumped our stuff and went to a little place I’d found listed on TripAdvisor when I’d looked into it before leaving home.  It was a diner in a strip mall.  Our first impressions were that it was a little unimpressive.

IMG_7712

Then I had the catfish.

IMG_7716

Where has this been my whole life?

We found a few minutes to wash the 1,300 miles off our tired selves, and made our way to bed by 9PM.

IMG_7720

Here we go again!

God is good.

All the time.

And as we prepared to embark on another family vacation, I was blown away with how GENEROUS God has been EVERYDAY.  Family.  Home.  Food.  Health.
And on top of that, we get to travel to new places together.  I don’t deserve any of this, and yet He has allowed these opportunities.

This was our first vacation in the new van which I have named Jarvis.  I was sad to leave our old van, “Trippy” behind.

IMG_7564

Our journey began after John and Stewart got home from work and we got the car loaded.  We pulled out almost on time – 5:00 PM.

IMG_7575

John drove us out of town and the plan was he’d drive til about 9PM or so, and then I would take over as he moved to the back to sleep.

One of the first things we noticed when we bought the new van was it had a LOT more cargo space.  It also, however, has slightly less leg room in the third and fourth rows.  We talked about working to be patient with one another and just making it all work.

Bon Voyage!
