Vacation wrap up…

As our vacation started to wind down, we repeated days at Busch Gardens and SeaWorld, and had one last day at “home” before hitting the road Friday evening.

Wednesday, we went back to Busch Gardens.

This ride is called Cheetah Hunt.  It launches you from 0 to 30 in two seconds as it launches you out of the station.  It later does a launch to 60 mph.  It is a very long ride that runs the expanse of the park and is designed to make you feel like a cheetah hunting for food.

DSC_8781

They were testing Falcon’s Fury which was behind schedule for opening.  (I’m rather grateful…)  It drops you to the ground as a falcon diving for food.

DSC_8782

We watched veterinary surgery on an African bird.

Traveling the world animal and ice skating show.  You had to see it.  It was pretty cool.

Thursday we went back to SeaWorld.  The weather was spotty.  It was our only day to really contend with the weather.  (A bit on Wednesday).  We also had to deal with the dreaded… SCHOOL GROUPS.  I’m so glad we had been there on a quieter day, Sunday.

DSC_8946DSC_8947DSC_8949DSC_8950DSC_8951DSC_8952

It was really windy.

DSC_8974DSC_8989DSC_8991DSC_8996DSC_8999DSC_9001DSC_9012

We also did a super cool 3D, 360 degree movie called Turtle Trek.  We followed a turtle through it’s life span in about 4 minutes…

A BEAUTIFUL dolphin and diving show.  It was one of those things that you can’t capture pictures to do it justice.

DSC_9033DSC_9040DSC_9052DSC_9058

We went back to Antarctica to see Puck and his friends.

DSC_9069DSC_9075DSC_9078

and here’s PUCK!

DSC_9084DSC_9087DSC_9094

The threat of thunderstorms and the spotty rain really messed with our touring.  We did get to do a bunch of the smaller rides.

DSC_9105DSC_9113DSC_9118DSC_9137DSC_9144DSC_9149

Friday we stayed at the house.

DSC_9154DSC_9155DSC_9157DSC_9163DSC_9172DSC_9173DSC_9177DSC_9178

I took a nap from 12:00 P.M. – 3:00 P.M. so I could help with driving in the later hours of the night.  We left around 5:00 P.M. on Friday which is a ridiculously foolish time to leave any southern city.  It took ForEvER to get out of Florida.  And it took a FULL 24-hours to get home.  Far worse time that we made on the way home.  But it was a super good vacation, even if I was ready to chew off my arm by the time I got to West Virginia.  😉

Rest Day

A day to do nothing.  We did nothing with gusto.

DSC_8681DSC_8684DSC_8688DSC_8693DSC_8694

After Daddy brought Katriel out of the pool she had a lot to say about it.  She grabbed his leg and screeched and pulled on his shorts in the direction of the pool.  For real.  It was funny to see her so adamant to return to swimming!

DSC_8697DSC_8701DSC_8703DSC_8706

Interestingly enough, she wasn’t as adamant about sharing a snack…

DSC_8708DSC_8709

But she was consistent enough to get one.  ♥

DSC_8710

Then she got her big brother to take her back in.

DSC_8719

These are the kind of photos that keep a tired mom going.

DSC_8722DSC_8723

See – I DID get in the water!  I also managed to read an entire book this day, as well.  A WHOLE BOOK.

DSC_8729DSC_8731

After Katriel’s nap.

DSC_8733

We went to an Early Bird Dinner at Black Angus Steak House.  This is becoming a tradition for us.

DSC_8735

We also went to DownTown Disney again.  Johanna still wewwy needed a lot of things.

DSC_8738

John went into the Ghirardelli shop to get himself a coffee.  The waitress paused to assess him and ask, “Because you aren’t hot enough?”  It WAS about 82 degrees as 6 P.M.  Every other guest in the store was ordering ice cream.

DSC_8741DSC_8744

Katriel was very interested in a balloon a little girl had.  And the little girl gave it to her.  ♥

DSC_8745DSC_8747DSC_8750DSC_8753DSC_8758

I wish we’d had a few more of these nothing days to enjoy this trip around…

Busch Gardens Day 1

I hadn’t been to Busch Gardens in almost 20 years.  I remember it being a beautiful place and was thrilled to see that was still the case.  It is also known for its roller coasters and they did not disappoint.  They also had a bazillion (or slightly less) rides in a Sesame Street themed area that Johanna, and even Katriel, got to enjoy.  In fact, they had more rides in their little Sesame Street Safari of Fun section than all of Sesame Place does.

DSC_8498DSC_8499

They also have animals.  Lots of them.  Here is our hungry alligator saying hi to lots of hungry alligators.

DSC_8501DSC_8504DSC_8506DSC_8511DSC_8517DSC_8524DSC_8525DSC_8529DSC_8545DSC_8554DSC_8556DSC_8568DSC_8576DSC_8581DSC_8589DSC_8599DSC_8601DSC_8604DSC_8614DSC_8624DSC_8653DSC_8659DSC_8672DSC_8674

We had gobs and gobs and gobs of fun, and the weather was AMAZING. Wow. We were there from open to close (10 A.M. – 6 P.M.) and did not do half of what they had to offer. I’m so glad we had an additional day to look forward to at this park. I am sharing about 5% of the photos from that day.  We had a blast.

DSC_8677

Oh – and check out this sign!  I wish we had this kind of parking around town!

Mother’s Day at SeaWorld

In the nutshell this is a great park.  It was so clean and beautiful and FUN.
DSC_8359DSC_8364DSC_8366
The park was pretty quiet and we walked onto rides for the first half of the day.
DSC_8367
We bought the All-Day-Dining deal and each got a wristband.  This allowed us to eat in any of 8 restaurants as often as we wanted.  Each trip through the line we could have one entrée, one drink, and one side.  A side can be a dessert, a bowl of fruit, a muffin the size of your head.  Seriously, I’m kicking myself for not taking pictures of our meals.  Mealtime is a bit busy for us, though.
DSC_8368DSC_8369DSC_8370DSC_8371
Antarctica is one of their newer areas.  They have a sweet ride where you follow a baby penguin named Puck.
DSC_8372DSC_8373
At the end of the ride you get out of your little car thingy and see a bazillion penguins.  It is 32 degrees in this huge room.
DSC_8381
After our Polar Vortex this winter this chilly room was nothing.
DSC_8382DSC_8384
You could tell who the southerners were, though.  They hightailed it out of that exhibit pretty quickly.
DSC_8390
Penguins are Stewart’s favorite animal.  He was sincerely giddy.  It was so very, very cool.
Do you see how close we could get?  The rule is don’t touch or try to feed.  It seems to work and I loved being that close.

DSC_8393DSC_8397
I kept everyone on a hard and fast schedule encouraged our group to move purposefully toward the Shamu stadium to catch the whale show.  It was marvelous.  Kids got soaked.
DSC_8403
We then visited the Wild ARCTIC zone.
DSC_8419DSC_8424
Longest winter in the history of the world and we hang out it polar regions.  Go figure.
DSC_8427DSC_8431DSC_8433DSC_8438DSC_8440DSC_8443DSC_8448
We watched a fantastic dance/acrobat show.  It was seriously awesome.  Hard to take photos of fast moving acrobats in the dark…
DSC_8456
Lots of aquariums.
DSC_8464
And this is my favorite.
DSC_8468DSC_8475
John took the big four to a big roller coaster and Nan, Hanny, Katriel and I hit the dessert line.
DSC_8477DSC_8479DSC_8480
More aquariums.
Frankly, I love parks like this.  We all love the rides and I love to see the vast variety of animals God created.  I love to be close to them and study them.  I am in awe of His handiwork.
DSC_8481DSC_8490DSC_8491DSC_8496
And this ride…
Best ride ever.  As a friend described it, it is ELEGANT.
This is not MY video… this is from YouTube.
I’m good for about one crazy roller coaster a day.  I’m glad I picked this one.

Scattered Saturday…

This post could also be titled:
”Stacy’s Major Foul”
”On the Road Again”
or
”I Lego My Brain.”
We normally do Disney parks when we visit Florida and had decided against that this trip.  The tickets for Aquatica/SeaWorld/Busch Gardens were SO much less expensive than what we normally buy, so that encouraged my sister to look into visiting Universal Studio’s parks.  We also had decided before we left home that John and Tabitha would visit LegoLand while we were there.  So – Saturday, which was our “free” day, I offered to drive Kelly to Universal Studios, and then drive John and Tabitha to LegoLand.  I had it in my head that LegoLand was near Universal.  Well, if by near I meant “in the same state,” I was right.  But if by near I meant NEAR, I was wrong.
They ARE both in Florida.  But Universal Studios was about 25 minutes NORTH of our vacation house, and LegoLand was about 45 minutes SOUTH of our vacation house.
SO – Saturday morning, John, Tabitha, Katriel and I drove Kelly to Universal Studios.  We then turned the car ALL THE WAY AROUND and drove for just more than an hour to get Tab and John to LegoLand.  Katriel got a decent nap…
Thankfully, my mom had stayed at the house with Stewart, Nigel, Marie and Johanna.  The older three swam and Nan taught Johanna how to play UNO.  When Katriel and I finally got there (TWO AND HALF HOURS AFTER WE’D LEFT) I felt guilty about Johanna having not had a chance to swim and I geared both of us up for some swimming.  Which she wasn’t interested in after we got in.  Yup.
We ate SOMETHING for lunch (couldn’t tell you) and then Nan, Stewart, Nigel, Marie, Johanna, Katriel and I went to DownTown Disney.  About 20 minutes north of our house.  Zoom, Zoom.
We did find a few more license plates for our license plate game so that was cool.
First stop was… the bathroom.  Because, you know, IT ALWAYS IS…!
Then we visited the Lego Store.
IMG_0779IMG_0780
And then the World of Disney store.  This is always a favorite.  What was really fun this time was that I now have a smart phone.  And when ever someone saw something they might like I could see what Amazon had to say about it.  Winking smile  This book was “only” $19.95 at World of Disney.  Amazon had it for $9.96.  I put it in my virtual shopping cart to check out the day we started our drive home.  I’m sure this is not how Bob Iger wants us to shop.
DSC_8309
We played at “Once Upon a Toy.”  Between World of Disney and Once Upon a Toy I think I heard Johanna say no less than 42 times, “I wewwy need dis.”  Yes, speech therapy continues, and no, she didn’t get anything she wewwy needed from me.  (Her grandmother bought her a hair brush.)
DSC_8312DSC_8314DSC_8317DSC_8321DSC_8322DSC_8325
Apparently Katriel wewwy needed a plush Minnie Mouse.  Nan was happy to help her out.
DSC_8327DSC_8329DSC_8331DSC_8339
Meanwhile, an hour south of us, John and Tabitha had our other camera and recorded Daddy and Tabby’s Day of Fun.

Around 5 PM, we picked up Kelly from Universal Studios and then we all headed south to get John and Tabitha.  They’d all had good days and I “only” clocked in 5.5 hours of driving for our “nothing” day.  Truly, though, I’m so glad they had fun.
We capped the night off with some P.M. swimming.  I didn’t go in.  I’ve turned in to one of those women who need it to be 86 degrees in the air and 84 degrees in the water before I swim.  When did that happen to me?
DSC_8342DSC_8345DSC_8348DSC_8344DSC_8349
And then there was ice cream.

Day at Sea

Contrary to his nature, Nigel was up EARLY on our day at sea.  He and I snuck out of the stateroom for some early morning roaming, fuseball, photos,

DSC_8046

and pre-breakfast snack.  (We take sunscreen seriously.)

DSC_8048

Around 8 AM he and I ducked into the theater to catch a DisneyNature film called Bears.  It worked out so well that pretty much the majority of family entertainment was on Deck 5, as our staterooms were Deck 5.  I sat with him a while then decided I’d go back to the room and see what everyone else was up to.  John was finished up his shower and the older girls were dressed.  I walked them to the theater and sat them in with Nigel (and the maybe 6 other people taking in an early morning movie), and I headed back to the stateroom to help get Katriel and Johanna up.  Stewart was sound asleep.  Around 9 A.M. I headed back to the theater to check on the kids and I saw the second Princess Gathering gathering.  This one was a mob scene.  Golly I’m glad we went on Tuesday.

DSC_8050

By 9:30 the movie was over and I helped John herd everyone to, yup, Cabanas for breakfast.  All but Stewart.  I dawned on me that he might be tired… but that he would be really disappointed if he slept through the last full cruise day.  At 9:44 A.M. I told him he was welcome to continue sleeping but I wanted him to know that it was 9:44.  He SHOT out of bed and moved rapidly on his own.  He did NOT want to miss any more of his day.  When he learned that Nigel had already watched an entire movie he was in disbelief!

We didn’t take a lot of photos this day.  I was busy doing “stuff”.  The kids visited in and out of their clubs and swam.  We grabbed lunch from all kinds of the on board food areas.  Sandwiches, salads, hot dogs, pizza, etc.  Later, I hung out with the little girls on Deck 9 while John and the kids went back to the theater to watch the Muppet movie once more.  John had left early the last time with Katriel.  Johanna opted to play in her club and Katriel opted to play with her shoes.  Actually – Katriel made friends EVERYWHERE we went.  The Cast Members (staff) at Disney parks have always been quick to engage children while parents eat, shop, etc., and it was no different on the ship.

Nan, Kelly, Katriel, Johanna, and I took a walk all the way around Deck 4.  It was so cool to see ocean EVERYWHERE as far as the eyes could see.

DSC_8055DSC_8057

There was a “dance party” in the Atrium that confounded Johanna.  She didn’t want to dance with the characters.  She really wanted to hug them.  When she realized there would be no one-on-one bonding, she was done.

DSC_8061DSC_8069

We swam some more…

DSC_8071DSC_8083

And headed to our room before the show to dress for dinner.
Of the four evenings at sea, three nights had stage productions and one had a comedian.  We skipped the first stage production because of the content (Villains), and we skipped the comedian.  The other two shows, “Twice Charmed,” (a twist on the Cinderella story), and “Disney Dreams,” were both nice productions.  I found them O.K. but the kids all liked them to varying degrees.  They did do some cool special effects and it is no high school production.  It was very upscale.  I’m just not that into Disney.  (Really.)

DSC_8085

After the show we did our nightly torture privilege of taking photos.

DSC_8087

Including the sisters who didn’t want to pose because she wasn’t on the bottom step.

DSC_8092DSC_8094DSC_8106DSC_8113

Katriel walked right up to these officers and just stood there facing them at first waiting to be picked up.  She does this with a lot of people.  They came down to her level instead.

DSC_8129

The non-Butler on the left was our Main Server, Genesis.  Yup, that is REALLY his name and he is a Christian.   He is from the Philippines.  On the right is Sorin, from Romania.  He was our Head Server.  (Over the whole dining room.)

DSC_8132

This time on the right it is Joe.  He is from India.  He was our Assistant Server.  (He gets drinks, and helps clear, etc.)

DSC_8137DSC_8140DSC_8142DSC_8143DSC_8144DSC_8148

Like mother, like daughter! ♥

DSC_8151

This was a shot of the empty theater.

DSC_8167

There was some melancholy this night… … …

Tomorrow we had to get off.

CASTAWAY CAY!!!

best_day_ever_tangled_rapunzel

Yup – that it was.  The best day of the cruise, anyway.

Like most cruise lines, Disney has a private island.  Most of the sailings that depart from east and gulf coast ports make at least one stop there.  John and I had nothing but amazing memories from our stop there in 2001.  We held Castaway Cay (pronounced key) dear in our hearts, but both acknowledged we had forgotten more about the island than we remembered.

Again, I woke early and headed up on deck for a few photos.

DSC_7804

I loved getting shots of the empty decks.  They call that big movie screen “Funnel Vision” and even in the height of sunlight it was clear as can be.

DSC_7808DSC_7810DSC_7811DSC_7813DSC_7818

I walked the long way to meet up with John and the kids for breakfast so I could take some shots as we were approaching the island.  As we began to dock I was mesmerized.  It was so pretty and inviting.  My mind clicked back that I needed to hurry up and eat so we could disembark as soon as they gave permission.

DSC_7815DSC_7820DSC_7822

Breakfast in Cabanas.  Again.  Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

DSC_7824DSC_7826

We were off the ship pretty early, but I have no idea what time, really.  8:30? 8:45?

DSC_7827

This.

DSC_7830

I felt like a kid in a candy shop.  I was just happy.  Very, very happy.  So glad to share this sand and sunshine and warmth with my favorite people.  We took the tram out to the more distant family beach.

DSC_7831DSC_7833DSC_7834DSC_7835

We grabbed a complimentary wagon and a sand-friendlier-than-most stroller.
John and the big four enjoyed Pelican Plunge.  Actually, Stewart, Nigel and Marie spent the most time out there.

DSC_7840DSC_7841

We had no trouble finding lounge chairs and Nan, Kelly, the little girls and I went to the beach/play area.  It felt a little more crowded than I had hoped.  None of us were interested in swimming per se so it didn’t really bother me.

DSC_7838

After a while we left John and the big three at Pelican Plunge and the rest of us went to check out the splash area.

DSC_7845DSC_7852

We splashed.

DSC_7854

We decided to explore a little bit and moseyed back toward the first family beach.

DSC_7857

This was empty decidedly less crowded.  We seriously made ourselves at home in this area.

DSC_7860DSC_7862DSC_7863DSC_7865DSC_7866DSC_7874DSC_7875DSC_7877

Somewhere in here we took a break for lunch at Cookies.  They have two identical buffets set up on the island which are included in cruise fare.  They were delicious and we found the same attention to detail with food allergies there as we did on board.  They also had free standing beverage stations and soft-serve stations just like on board.

DSC_7879DSC_7882DSC_7884DSC_7892

At some point we decided to check out more of the island.  We did not rent bikes, or do the 5K, or parasail.

DSC_7895

We did rent these water trikes and took turns.

DSC_7898DSC_7901DSC_7905

Okay – truth be told John did all the escorting except for once when Marie and I went out.  God alone got us back to shore as my gams are pretty wimpy and Marie could barely reach the pedals.  I trust that they wouldn’t let us float out to sea.

DSC_7917

Then more swimming.

DSC_7922DSC_7925

And a nap.

DSC_7928DSC_7932DSC_7936DSC_7937DSC_7940DSC_7942

At 4:15 P.M. they announced that it was, well, 4:15 P.M.  And seeing as how they wanted all aboard at 4:45 P.M. we thought it wise to get moving out.

DSC_7946DSC_7948

We were not the LAST people to board.  But I know we were in the last 10%.  5%?

DSC_7952DSC_7955DSC_7957DSC_7962

Saying good-bye was hard.  I positioned myself on deck as we were pulling away.  And I was sad.  Yup – another confession.  For a minute I did want to cry.  Then I grew up.  The ship had backed into place so we truly did pull away.  As I watched the island get smaller and smaller I just thanked God.  Over and over and over.  Nothing terribly meaningful at all.  Just genuine thanksgiving and awe that He had allowed that day to happen.  There is so much going on on His world.  And for reasons I will never deserve, He allowed our family this amazingly awesome day on this GORGEOUS ISLAND.  I accepted at that moment that I could very likely never see that island again ever, ever, ever.  And that just prompted me to thank Him some more.

And you know what is SO good to remember?  That GORGEOUS, AMAZING ISLAND will look like gum on the bottom of my sandal compared to HEAVEN.  And Heaven?  I get to live there, FOREVER and EVER and EVER.  And I won’t be looking to any sun to warm me.  The SON will be life-giving FOREVER and EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As the island disappeared from sight (ships move much more quickly than I imagined) I headed back into our staterooms to pass out our pirate gear.  We’d worked all winter assembling our ensembles from stuff we picked up at Goodwill and WalMart.  They do a whole Pirates IN the Caribbean theme on most of their cruises.

DSC_7968DSC_7971DSC_7978

Before supper we stopped to dance for a few minutes.

DSC_7991DSC_7994

This was my least favorite dinner.  I tried something new, which was good.  But I didn’t love it.  So there you go.

DSC_8000DSC_8002DSC_8006DSC_8018

Being a parrot is exhausting.

You HAVE to watch this short video…

UGH – YouTube is being ornery… I’ll post later

Stewart had another safe dessert.

DSC_8031

She never woke until the next morning.

DSC_8033

She slept through the deck party.  (Tab was beat, too.)

DSC_8041

DSC_8035

And she slept through the fireworks.  THROUGH FIREWORKS.

Oceans make you tired.

I didn’t take photos of the fireworks.  I was way too much enjoying FIREWORKS WHILE IN THE OCEAN.
